Eatfitlive health is owned and operated by partners John and Annette. They are Fremantle locals and have lived in the South Fremantle area for 20 years.
John and Annette are very passionate about health and wellness, and their infectious energy radiates throughout the wellness centre. They both strongly believe that your mind plays a key role in your overall health so meditation forms a big part of their daily practice. And of course, eating healthy and doing regular exercise.
The idea of for eatfitlive health was borne after a magical trip to Bali as this was a life-changing moment in both John and Annette’s health journeys.
Back in 2010, my mother had a stroke and was admitted to hospital. In hospital, despite having diabetes, she was fed a high sugar diet that consisted mainly of processed foods and refined carbohydrates such as bread and cakes. I’m a Registered Nurse myself and to me this just didn’t feel right – my mother was chronically ill yet she was being given food that was doing her blood sugar levels no favours whatsoever!
This got me thinking… and researching… and researching some more. I was fascinated by all these things that I was learning about health and nutrition. I even discovered that it is possible to beat type 2 diabetes, simply changing your diet and especially cutting out wheat and refined foods.
A few months later, my dad died of a heart attack and this shocked me to the core as my dad was always so healthy and did everything “right”. However, I later found out that even though my dad’s diet was considered healthy as he ate lots of veggies – he also ate lots of WHEAT!
I was now on a mission and I actually persuaded my mum to come along for the ride. I decided to put her on a no-wheat, no-sugar, no-processed or packet food diet. The results were staggering. Six months after she was on this healthy diet, her blood sugar levels dropped dramatically and she no longer needed her diabetic medication. She also lost weight!
I felt so inspired by this and all my newfound knowledge about health that I suggested to my partner Annette that we should move to Bali for 3 months with our son Blake (who was 3 at the time). And this is exactly what we did. The experience was life-changing for us and it completely transformed how we live our lives today.
At the time, I was overweight and weighed 110kg. I felt pretty unhealthy and lacked energy. In Bali, I decided to do a juice detox and I started drinking 2-3 litres of freshly squeezed green juice per day. I wasn’t sure how I would go and whether I would be able to sustain it. But I did, and I actually started to feel pretty damn amazing. Plus, the weight started falling off me!
As part of this detox, there were a range of other therapies available so I jumped straight in and gave each of them a go. I tried colonic hydrotherapy (despite feeling apprehensive!) and this actually really helped to speed up the detoxification process; meditation and yoga which was fantastic for relaxation and quietening the mind; and infrared saunas which also aided in the removal of toxins. After doing all this, I had such an energy burst that I started going on daily mountain bike rides where I would ride for up to 5 -10km per day. I hadn’t done anything like this in years!
The whole detox had such a profound effect on my health and wellbeing, and the results were quite amazing. I dropped 4-5 kg in a week and a staggering 20kg over 5 weeks. And this was just from drinking daily juices, doing colonics, exercising and my meditation practice. I had so much energy it amazed me. I felt like my youthful self again and when I got back to Australia, everyone kept saying that I looked 10 years younger!
This experience made me realise that health really starts from within. And in order to achieve optimum health, you need to combine 3 things: Nutrition, Fitness and Mindfulness. You can’t do one without the other, as you simply won’t get the lasting results. I continue to do a juice cleanses with colonic hydrotherapy and infrared sauna usually twice a year as this helps to keep my health in check. For the rest of the year, I mostly eat a balanced, whole food diet, drink lots of green juices, do some form of daily movement (even if that’s just going for a walk) and regularly meditate.
Annette and I are so passionate about helping people with their health and that’s the main reason why we started eatfitlive health. We wanted to create a space where we could bring together the best of the best in health and wellness, and recreate what we experienced in Bali so that everyone in Fremantle could benefit from it too!
